Unfortunately, only 13 boxers took home the Golden Gloves. Our very own, Joey Higgins and Patrick Day, FHS 1979 & 2010 respectively, worked hard and long to make it to the finals.... The finals were held at the world famous Madison Square Garden. Patrick boxed for three action packed rounds. He was tough and tenacious. However, the judges awarded his opponent the win. Patrick demonstrated good sportsmanship and is Freeport's champ! See you next year in the 2011 Golden Gloves

On October 15th, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), Dr Tommy O took the opportunity to educate attendees at the United Bronx Parents 822 Senior Program on the devastating effects of AIDS which disproportionately effects the Latino community. NLAAD is a day when all are encouraged to get tested for HIV and become aware how one can protect themselves from contracting the virus. Communities must come together and push for support from both public officials and religious leaders to not only increase awareness but to help find a cure for this deadly and widespread disease.

On January 14, 2010, Dr. Thomas O'Brien, of the Ask Dr Tommy O' Show, along with Bishop Timothy Birkett, of Church Alive Community Church, held a candlelight memorial to remember both the survivors and those lost in the devastating earthquake that struck the island of Haiti. Dr Tommy O' and Bishop Birkett reminded the community that even as we face tough times, we should always remember that there are those who are much less fortunate than us. They asked for people to look inside themselves and find a way to donate in any way possible, big or small. Dr. O'Brien, Bishop Birkett, United Bronx Parents, Inc. and La Casa De Salud as well as local merchants and community members took the initiative and joined Stepping Stone Ministries and donated a truck load of clothes and medical supplies to those in need. Stepping Stone Ministries has already delivered two containers filled with supplies needed by the people of Haiti. To become apart of this movement, donations can be made to Stepping Stones Ministries, P.O. Box 564311, College Point, NY 11356 or visit: http://www.ssmny.org/index.html
